Study In Europe with Your Spouse: All You Need To Know

In this special edition of the Smart BeeE newsletter, we are here to discuss on the most popular topic of international education: bringing your spouse or partner along for the journey.

Study and Work Abroad with Your Loved One

Around the world, 35 countries warmly welcome married couples and, in certain instances, unmarried partners, facilitating the pursuit of educational aspirations while you study.

Here’s an overview of select study destinations and the opportunities they provide:

1️⃣ Canada: Spouse Visa

Canada welcomes spouses or common-law partners of international students. They can apply for an open work permit, granting them the right to work without needing a job offer. The work permit duration aligns with the student visa.

2️⃣ Australia: Spouse Visa

International students studying in Australia can bring their spouse or family under the Dependent Visa program. Spouses’ work rights vary depending on the student’s level of study.

3️⃣ United States: Spouse Visa (F-2/J-2)

In the United States, spouses can apply for F-2 or J-2 visas either simultaneously with the student or later. J-2 dependents can work after receiving proper authorization.

4️⃣ United Kingdom: Spouse Visa

The UK currently does not offer a specific spouse visa for students. Applicants were allowed to apply with their spouse until the November 2024 intake.

5️⃣ Germany: Spouse Visa

Family members can join students in Germany if certain requirements are met. Spouses can work if they qualify for suitable employment opportunities.

6️⃣ New Zealand: Partner of a Student Work Visa

New Zealand offers a Partner of a Student Work Visa for students pursuing specific qualifications. This visa allows open work conditions, enabling partners to work in any legal job.

7️⃣ Finland: Residence Permit

Spouses can accompany students to Finland while they study. They can also apply for a residence permit for work if desired.

8️⃣ Denmark: Denmark Student Dependent Visa

Denmark known for its supportive environment for students and their loved ones welcomes family members of students without requiring a work permit. They can live and work freely in Denmark, provided all documents are valid.

9️⃣ France: EU Blue Card

In France, spouses or registered partners of students can explore career opportunities with the EU Blue Card permit, offering them access to a wide range of professional prospects and enhancing their employment options while accompanying their partners on their educational journey.

1️⃣0️⃣ Sweden: Spouse Visa

Sweden allows dependents to apply along with the student visa application. Spouses can work without significant restrictions.

These opportunities vary by country and program, so it’s essential to explore the specific requirements and regulations before making plans.

Studying abroad doesn’t have to mean separation from your loved ones. With careful planning and knowledge of the options available, you can embark on this educational adventure together. Whether you’re drawn to the historic streets of Europe or the natural wonders of the Southern Hemisphere, there’s a path for you and your partner.
